The Effects from Polystyrene

Polystyrene contains the toxic substances Styrene and Benzene, suspected carcinogens, and neurotoxins that are hazardous to humans. Some estimates put the lifespan of styrofoam in a landfill around 500 years, and some put it way beyond that.

Most bean bags are filled with a manmade material known as expanded polystyrene (EPS). EPS is a hard-celled plastic very similar to Styrofoam, which is extruded polystyrene. Besides bean bag beads, EPS is used for disposable coffee cups and as cushioning material for packaging and shipping.

Our Goal

Recognising the environmental impact of polystyrene bean bag fillings, we searched far and wide for an eco-friendly alternative that wouldn’t compromise the quality and comfort of our bean bags.

BioFoam® is the perfect solution and we’re the only bean bag company in the world using this vegetable-based alternative.

We’re working hard to make sure all our products have minimal impact on the environment.

Recycled Plastic thread

We use thread that’s made from recycled plastic bottles. It gives us the same strength as polyester thread, but helps the planet out a little bit.

BioFoam®

Our BioFoam® filling is made from a biopolymer derived from plants. It’s at the heart of what makes our products kinder to the environment.

Hard Wearing

Our 100% cotton outer bag is durable and hard wearing. Our fabrics have been tested to over 26,000 rubs.

Washable

The outer covering can have small stains wet sponged out, but for bigger stains the covering can be completely removed and dry cleaned.

Safety Features

Our two lockable safety zips, prevents a child’s access to the harmless alternative filling but allows you to remove the outer cover for cleaning.

Light and Portable

With our largest product measuring 90cm high x 85cm diameter, it’s under 5kg in weight, and can be moved around your house with ease.

Our outer cover fabrics are all made from natural cotton and tested to cover schedule 4 cigarette test, with a tested schedule 3 barrier interliner. Our BioFoam® itself has been tested to schedule 2 for non-foam fillings and fibres.

To make our products to a higher standard as possible they are also tested to BS 5852:2006, Section 11 for non-domestic environments. This test covers all composites used on all our products. For structure and durability our bean products have been tested to EN 16139 Test level 1 for general non-domestic environments.

11. Is the fabric you use eco-friendly?

The fabrics used in our products are high quality cotton, and sourced in the UK. This is a better environmental choice to traditional bean bag fabrics, which often contain viscose or polyester. The cotton we choose is hard wearing – it’s been thoroughly tested to make sure that it stands up to life as a bean bag, and our customers appreciate that cotton is a more sustainable choice and less damaging than other man-made alternatives.

12. Does BioFoam® last or do your beanbags need refilling over time?

BioFoam® has many great properties, one of which is durability, so the need for top-ups will be low. However, we know that you’re going to spend a lot of time using your bean bag, so if you do need to top up the filling, we can provide you with a refill tube to use at home.

13. What chemicals are used in the fire retardant barrier interliner?

There are no chemicals used on the outer bag. It is important to us that no chemicals come in contact with the skin.

The only chemicals used on our product are on the fire retardant barrier interline which by law we have to use according to health and safety standards. The chemicals used on the inner bag as given to us by our suppliers are as follows:

“Composition/Data on Components: Chemical Characterisation: Flame retardant based on inorganic phosphorous and nitrogen compounds. Hazard Identification: None”
